Sultans...?

I    do not really understand the mentality of the Sultans and their people.  First of all, why would people support a leader who is on drugs, gets drunk, and has sex all day every day?  Your leader is supposed to be someone who does a good job of representing the majority of the people of the country, and is trusted to do what's right for the country.  In this case, the sultans were basically just living their lives knowing that they were on top.  They did what they want, no matter how trashy it was.  Another thing they did was kill people...and a lot of innocent ones.  How does that make a good leader? How could anyone look at someone who "reserved the right to kill at least ten innocent people a day" and say, "Yeah, that's my leader"?  It makes no sense to me.  This area was doomed from the start, in my opinion.

I agree with you Lindsay. A leader is supposed to be the ideal citizen. How could anyone think that behaviors ok? Im surprised no one rebeled the Sultans. But I guess they didn't out of fear of being killed since he did kill innocent people.

I'm going to assume that the reason why the people put up with the sultans' behaviors is either because they had no choice in the matter and if they tried to rebel then they would get severely punished. Or maybe the people didn't know that their sultans were trashy drunks because it was kept out of the public eye. Countries have been known to lie a bit about what's going on.
